How common are termites in San Diego?

Termites are a big problem in San Diego. In fact, it’s one of the worst cities in the US for termite infestations, with one report placing them 11th among 50 other cities ranked in the US.

Although subterranean termites are found all over the United States, dampwood and drywood termites are also prevalent in Southern California.

Therefore, people with homes or properties in and around San Diego need to be especially vigilant against infestations, as termites can cause devastating damage to wooden structures.

Termite treatments in San Diego

Fumigation for termites

Fumigation is a pest control measure in which an entire property is filled with insecticidal fog, which kills all the pests within. This is a drastic treatment and requires the entire property to be tented and evacuated.

Although fumigation may be necessary for people with severe and persistent termite infestations, spot treatments may be preferred as they are usually more safe and convenient.

Spot treatment for termites

Spot treatments for termites involved the drilling of small holes into infested wood which are then injected with a dry termiticide. Spot treatment can be highly effective against termites, but only if the product permeates the wood far enough to reach all the insects. Xtermite claims that their Orange oil treatment does exactly that, and is 100% safe and eco-friendly.

Spot treatments are often safer than fumigation (as they use a much smaller quantity of chemicals and the application process is far more precise). However, they do not guarantee the complete eradication that can be achieved with fumigation treatments.

Heat treatments for termites

Another more eco-friendly termite treatment is heat treatment, in which infested structures are tented and heated to between 120- and 140-degrees Fahrenheit for around 35 minutes. Such high temperatures will effectively kill termites and their eggs, clearing the entire infestation in a single session.

Heat treatment is especially effective against drywood termites, which are one of the most prevalent termite species in Southern California. It may be just as effective as fumigation treatments (as it eradicates both adult termites and their eggs) but doesn’t require the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
