bug zapper light

This electric mosquito killer is the perfect device to use because it is able to eliminate everything from mosquitoes to moths to other biting insects and do it very efficiently. And that is because of a few reasons. First of all the housing of this zapper is made from high-grade alloy, that not only prevents it from rusting but also makes it more durable against different temperatures and conditions. Secondly, because of the design of this zapper, it is able to not only run on little electricity – the total wattage for this zapper is only 20 watts – but also emit light to all four sides, letting it double as additional house light too. Thirdly, there are no chemicals involved with this zapper, because the zapper lures mosquitoes using previously mentioned light and kills them with the 20 watts that run through the grid of this electric bug zapper. And fourthly, the zapper is able to clear up to 861 square feet large of an area from mosquitoes, so you will have to use only one of these devices if your outdoor space fits into these square feet.

The zapper itself is lightweight and compactable so it can be easily stored if necessary. A chain comes with the device, so you can easily hang it up anywhere or simply set it on a flat surface, and the zapper has an insect collecting tray on the bottom, so you can easily clean it out, once the device has killed enough bugs.

  • This best mosquito zapper is an indoors zapper, and because it is made from alloy, you probably shouldn’t place it outside especially in bad weather;
  • It requires electricity to work, so if you don’t have power available, then this zapper won’t work for you.

NK63 Bug Zapper Bulbs review

Another electric bug zapper that is meant strictly for outdoors use is this NK63 zapper by Sandalwood outdoors, who manufacture many different products meant for outdoors, like these bug zappers.

stinger bug zapper

This particular zapper is specially great because although it, the same as most other zappers, uses ultraviolet light to attract mosquitoes and other flying insects, so they actually come close to the device, in the case of this outdoor bug zapper the UV light comes from a LED lamp, meaning that not only it will use a lot less power, but also will last that much longer. Speaking of power, this zapper can be powered in two ways – by solar power and by using a rechargeable lithium battery. If you live in a sunny climate or if you are using this zapper during the summer then the device will probably be able to work from just the solar power it accumulates, but you can also manually charge the battery of this zapper if you don’t get as much sun or the zapper is placed in the shade.

Place the zapper in your garden, in your backyard, or even on your patio or balcony, hang it up using the handle that comes with the device or simply place it on some kind of surface, turn it on and enjoy your time without a trace of any mosquitoes, flies or other annoying insects. The zapper will make sure that an area of up to 3,000 square feet stays clear of mosquitoes and you don’t have to worry about implementing other mosquito repelling method.

  • Zapper is able to lure mosquitoes in up to 3,000 square feet area, so if your outdoor space isn’t bigger than that, you will be good to go with only one of these devices;
  • The LED lamps can serve also as regular garden, walkway or patio illumination light, to add light to your outdoor space.

  • This zapper is an outdoors only zapper, so don’t use it to get rid of mosquitoes inside;
  • Because it uses solar energy and battery, the zapper probably cannot run 24 hours a day, since it is not connected to a power source all this time.

About mosquito zappers

What are electric mosquito zappers?

Bug zappers are devices that are designed to kill mosquitoes by electrocution. These devices often utilize some sort of lure to attract the insects to the zapper and therefore to their death. An electric voltage is utilized to get rid of pests of this nature.

In the early stages of mosquito zappers, mosquito traps of this nature were referred to as electric discharge insect killers. Apparently, that didn’t stick. So they were renamed zappers, the zap in their current name adopted from the sound that the devices make when a bug is killed via the electricity that courses through the zapper.

How do electric mosquito zappers work?

Most insects will not wander into their death willingly. This is why zappers use lures to get the mosquitoes to fly close enough to the device for them to get zapped.

The setup of a zapper is that of a typical electric circuit. Gaps exist within the mesh through which a voltage flows. And when an insect flies into one of these gaps due to curiosity, it is instantly electrocuted. This can be confirmed by the ‘zap’ sound produced by the action of the electrical voltage.

For this device to function, it needs a power source. Depending on the model, the electricity the zapper needs can be supplied via a power cord or using energy stored in an electric cell such as batteries.

Usually, zappers use ultraviolet light to lure the insect. And although mosquitoes are more attracted to CO2 or heat as a lure, UV light works too. It still gets the mosquitoes close enough to the zapper for it to be able to do its job and electrocute mosquitoes on the spot.

In the center of this zapper is a fluorescent bulb responsible for the production of the ultraviolet light. Most bugs have a positive phototaxis response to light. This makes them susceptible to this electrical trap. But mosquitoes have a mixed response to light. Sometimes they respond positively to light. While other times they don’t. If a mosquito is seeking a possible host, it would usually exhibit a positive response to light.

However, once it has collected enough blood meal, it avoids lights of any sort. So, this trap will work on mosquitoes still seeking a host to feed on. Which, luckily for us, are the majority of the mosquitoes flying around.

Are electric mosquito zappers dangerous?

These devices might utilize electricity to exterminate insects such as mosquitoes, but they shouldn’t be considered dangerous. Unless a user is just careless and doesn’t use the zapper according to its user manual. To minimize the risk of accidents, these devices have a lamp-like housing with a casing made of plastic or metallic material, protecting you from receiving an electric shock when you touch the device.

One problem common to these zappers is the air around them gets littered with the carcasses of electrocuted insects. This increases the population of microorganisms that feed on such materials. However, since most mosquito zappers come with insect collecting trays, that isn’t nearly as big of a problem as it sounds. Provided that your zapper has a space dedicated to collecting the electrocuted mosquitoes, of course.

Mosquito zapper usage tips

While a few zappers can be used indoors, most are better suited for outdoor use. Using some type of electric zappers in your house is similar to giving mosquitoes an invitation into your home. They will come from different areas following the light only to zero in on the carbon dioxide you exhale and change course. Yes, those blood-sucking insects are more interested in finding a host than letting their curiosity reign supreme.

Also, you should make sure that you operate your mosquito zapper when the insects are the most active. Nighttime and late evening, early morning hours are the best times to do that since mosquitoes come out to feed during these times. And zappers just naturally work better at night since the ultraviolet light stands out in the dark.

You shouldn’t use a zapper during the day since your target insects rest during the day so you would be just wasting money by running a zapper during the day. Instead, during the day recharge your zapper if it’s battery-powered. Or leave it to bask in the sun if it’s solar-powered.

If you want to improve the efficacy of your electric zapper, consider using mosquito attractants like Octenol in addition to the UV light. The mosquitoes are big fans of this organic compound. And will be that much keener on flying near your zapper.

And make sure that you clear out the remains of dead insects daily. If you use an insect tray, you should wipe it clean every evening before turning on the zapper. Or if there is no tray, you should clean the surrounding area of dead insects. This will improve the efficiency of the zapper.

How to choose which zapper to buy

Knowing which electric zapper to purchase can be really hard. You have to think about so many things and look at several devices before making a decision as to which of them will be the best for you. So here is our little insight on the best ways to pick out a quality zapper for your home without putting your mind through unnecessary stress.

Power supply

If your home is located in an area with an irregular power supply, you might want to pick a zapper that is powered by a renewable energy source or batteries. Solar and battery-powered devices are just as efficient as ones that plug into the wall. And bonus, the zappers that do operate on solar power or batteries can be used in more remote areas that are nowhere near a power outlet.

Indoor or outdoor use?

You need to establish the place where you will be setting up the device. This isn’t about the portability of a specific model. It is more about identifying places which are often under rampage by mosquitoes. If you have an area near your home with a close proximity to a pond or swampy area, placing your zapper in that part of your outdoor area is recommended. Or if there is a particular door or window of your house that mosquitoes use to get indoors, place your zapper, that is suitable for indoor use, near that window or door.

Some electric zappers are easier to maintain than others. If you don’t have a lot of time to fuss with the mosquito zapper, you might want to go for a zapper which is easier to clean and maintain. As I mentioned before, some zappers come with an insect tray making the process of clearing out dead insects faster. So your best bet is to go for zapper with a tray rather than one without it.

If you are interested in a durable zapper and not some junk device that will fall apart on you upon the second use, looking at the features of the zapper is extremely vital. Some are built using materials which are more durable and can withstand the effects of elements like rain. While some, usually zappers meant for indoor use only, are made from less durable materials, therefore it wouldn’t be advisable to use these types of zappers in your garden or backyard.

There you have it, all the things you should know about electric zappers and how to choose the zapper that will work best for you and your home. Now that you know a little more about what zappers are, how they work, and what things you should look for in a zapper, you can move on to the reviews of the best electric mosquito zappers. We have gathered a list of the most efficient zappers out there, so no matter which one you choose, you will get a device that will help you fight mosquitoes and other annoying pests.

Chris Singletary

Too bad you don’t have reviews about how well they hold up with an onslaught of insects. It took 3 days to torch the guts of a flowtron BK-15D in my backyard from all the insects attacking it at night.

How can I get rid of chirping insect inside my house. They chirp all night in my bedroom.

    You first need to figure out what insects you’re dealing with. Those might be crickets. If so, there are plenty of products you can look into, such as baits, traps, sprays, etc. Pick whatever suits you best!
